Scholarship


John Kelly from The Rower in Kilkenny won his college round of the Farm Relief Services Memorial
Scholarship which rewards students who show outstanding leadership ability. The National finals
of the Farm Relief Services Memorial Scholarship took place at the Teagasc Colleges Challenge Day
in Kildalton College, Co. Kilkenny on Thursday 19th January. The Scholarship is run in conjunction
with Macra and a Winner is selected to represent each Teagasc college as a National Finalist. John
was representing the Kildalton Horticulture students. In the National Final he gave his presentation
on the leadership skills of General Eisenhower to a judging panel made up of Peter Byrne, FRS
Network CEO, and Alan Jagoe National President of Macra and Paddy Browne Head of Education
with Teagasc.

National Indoor Soccer

The national finals of the Ladies' and Men's Indoor Soccer competitions were held on Sunday the
15th of January in Gormanstown College, Co. Meath. Forty teams battled it out for the coveted
national titles. Taking part in the final of the competition were the Kilkenny City Ladies Team and the
Mullinavat Men’s Team. Well done to both teams for taking part on the day you did both your clubs
and Kilkenny County Macra proud. Macra National President, Alan Jagoe, speaking after the
event, congratulated all the participating teams. Mr. Jagoe said, “Competitions like indoor
soccer are a great hobby for young people along with being great fun. Macra, along with the
NDC, encourages members to get involved in sports as great exercise and a way of meeting
new people. Indoor soccer is as popular as ever, as seen by the many competitors’ who
battled it out for the coveted titles.”

Title Fights

Each year Macra holds four pageants (three for the ladies and one for the lads) and they are: Miss
Macra, Miss Blue Jeans, Queen of the Land and Mr Personality. Each year each county/region picks
a member to take part in each of the pageants and Kilkenny always delivers. The following members
will be going forward to do Kilkenny proud in each pageant. Callan’s Phil Daniels will be this year
entry for Mr Personality (held in Kilkenny), Kilkenny City’s Lisa Lynam will be Miss Blue Jeans and
Freshford’s own Colette Power will be Miss Macra, but ladies there is one more pageant for you

currently we do not have are Queen of the Land and are you the one to who would like the honour
to represent Kilkenny this year if so please contact the chairperson of your club as so as possible.

Question time

On Friday the 20th of January the county round of the Kerrygold Question time was held in the
village inn on Patrick Street in Kilkenny. There were several teams taking part on the night hoping to
represent Kilkenny in the National finals to be held on the 18th of February in Enfield, county Meath,
but on the night only two teams could go forward. Both teams from Kilkenny city macra received the
honour so from all of us in the county we wish you the best of luck.

Soccer Blitz winners

Well done to the both the Callan A men’s and Kilkenny city women’s team for making it through to
the national finals of next year’s indoor soccer tournament sponsored the National Dairy Council.
The county finals were held on the Friday the 27th of January in St. Canice’s hall. Well done to all
teams who took part on the night and best of luck to those getting to go forward to the national
finals to represent Kilkenny next year.

Winter Watch

In light of the predicted cold weather conditions and darker evenings all the members of Macra
are encouraged in their local area to be mindful of the needs of the elderly and isolated in our
communities. A simple visit to such people can demonstrate tremendous support and can identify if
people are in need. A simple act of kindness such as delivering a newspaper or groceries or helping
to gather wood for the fire can make all the difference. By spreading this message amongst Macra
members we can play an important role in our communities by looking after our neighbors.

Events

Calling all Kilkenny county macra members, keep Saturday the 11th of February free as it will be a
very busy day. The 1st reason why: our second annual intercounty hurling and camogie blitz will take
place in James Park in Kilkenny. Sign in is at half 10 with the blitz starting at 11o’clock also volunteers
are needed so if your free please contact your club chairperson or Bernie woods. The 2nd reason why
should keep the 11th of February free is the Kilkenny city Black Tie Ball will be taking place that night
from 8 till late in the Ormonde Hotel in Kilkenny. As always the Black Tie Ball is one of the events
held in Kilkenny that no member should miss out on if they can go so book your tickets fast as there
is a lot of interest from outside the county. Tickets cost a recession busting €35 euro and what do I
get for my money: a mulled wine reception, 4 course meal and for entertainment Domino effect to
dance the night away.

Soccer Blitz Winners

Well done to the both men’s and women’s team from Callan and Kilkenny city macra for making it
through to the next stage of the indoor soccer tournament. The final round of match’s will take place
in January on the 27th in O’Loughlin Gaels.

Public Speaking
Well done to Colette Power for represented Kilkenny macra and Mick Somers who won the
Impromptu Speaking at the Semi-Finals of Public Speaking & Impromptu Public speaking which were
held in Hotel Kilkenny on the 26th of November.

Goal Mile
Mullinavat Macra members will be supporting The Goal Mile. The Goal Mile will take place on
Stephens Day at 11.30am in the Mullinavat GAA grounds. Sponsorships cards are available from
Centra and Brogans in Mullinavat. Your support is needed for this worthy charity. There will be a
variety of games on the day including Tug of War and the annual "All Star Bet-more Chase". Fun
guaranteed for all ages.

Events
The county pool competition will take place on the 27th of December in the K-bowl at 7pm, sign in is
at 6.45.

South Tipperary Macra will host their annual New Year’s Eve ball in the Cahir House hotel on the 31st
of December. Tickets will cost €40 and are selling fast. The theme on the night is James Bond, so if
any member of Kilkenny macra would like to be shaking and not stirring in the New Year on the night
please contact your club chairperson or Mick wall for further details.

The county round of novice debating will be held on the 7th of January, venue to be confirmed. On
the night we will have South Tipperary and Waterford Macra joining us so if anybody is interested
please contact Mick wall.

Next county executive meeting will take place on the 12th of January in the Springhill Court hotel at
8.30pm. All clubs are asked to send two delegates to help plans out the next few months’ events and
to insure your club is well informed.

Welding


On the 9th of November the county final of the welding was held in Kildalton which was sponsored
by KWS (Kilkenny welding supplies). With over 23 entrants from three counties including Tipperary,
Waterford and Kilkenny, the competition was anybody’s to win the right to represent the county in
the national final in cork on the 2nd of December. Fionan Brennan of Kilkenny city macra will go on to
cork and show the rest of macra how we weld in Kilkenny. Well done from both everyone in Kilkenny
city and Kilkenny county macra.

Queen of the land  

Well done to Bernie woods for being crowned Queen of the Land in Tullamore on the 13th of
November. This year Bernie competed against 26 other finalist from all over Ireland. To earn the
convened crown to become queen of the land Bernie had to do two interviews one in front of a
panel of judges and the second in front of a live crowd on stage during the weekend and as we all
know Bernie did her county proud and became the 2011 Queen of the land. Well done to Bernie
from everyone in Kilkenny county macra and especially all your fellow members in Mullinavat macra.

Rally by the Lee


On the 28th to the 30th of October the Macra Na Feirme’s annual conference was held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, little Island, Cork, were members of Kilkenny County Macra were taking part in the following competitions: best new member, Kilian Kane; Callan in know your Ag; Paddy Phlean and Podge Power in the beef and sheep stock judging. Even though all the members who attended the rally had a great time taking part in the Halloween fancy dress (with all manner of costumes from two men dressing up as the lads from the 11850 Ad’s to the classic four man team of the teenage mutant ninja turtles) and the various tours being held, the members taking part went up against a very high level of standard in each competition but were unable to secure any of the title at the weekend. We in Kilkenny county macra know you all did your best and for that we a very proud to have you all as members of Kilkenny County Macra and that there’s always next year in Waterford.

Irish cancer society

On the 14th of October in the village inn, Freshford macra held a table quiz to help raise much needed funds for the Irish cancer society. On the night there was a packed room with over 14 tables helping to raise €600 by taking part and buying raffle tickets for the Irish cancer society. Freshford Macra would like to thank all who travelled from all over Kilkenny and Tipperary for taking part.

7-a-side Gaa Football
Well done to the Callan men who on Sunday the 16th of October reached the national Quarter finals in the 7-a-side Gaa football in Rhode, Co. Offaly, and also well done to the Paulstown ladies who reached the semi finals on the day. From all of your fellow macra members in Kilkenny you did us proud and remember there is always next year.

Treasure Hunt

On Saturday the 8th of October Kilkenny county macra hosted a treasure hunt which required teams  of 4 to visit certain parts of Kilkenny and take part in tasks and dares with photo graphic evidence needed to score points and become the overall winner on the night. With dares asking teams to get
the men from the team to go into the ladies toilets or pull their own pint. On the night the team from Kilmanagh won the treasure hunt but on the night the really winners were everyone who took part. Kilkenny county macra would like to thanks all the venues who took part on the night and a
special thanks to Bernie woods from Mullinavat macra for all her hard work she put into organising the night.


Club Profile - Kilkenny City

Kilkenny city macra was founded in 1946. Over the years Kilkenny city has taken part in many of the different activities that macra has to offer from debating, public speaking ,debating , know your Ag, indoor soccer, volleyball and bowling as well as helping out with the local community by
raising funds for charities such as cystic fibrosis. The club has had a long history of achievements here are only but a few; In personal growth, Mairead McEvoy won Queen of the Land in 1999.  Sport, Kilkenny city were crowned National Bowling Winners in 2005 with past members Philip
Fennelly, Regina Byrne, John Millea, Catherine Jackman, John Dunne, Jane Morris all taking part as one team. Knowledge, Kilkenny city became National Question Time Winners in 2007 with the winning team composed of the following current and past members, Fionan Brennan, Mary
Brennan, Aoife Lanigan and Mary Drennan. Not only has the club gone on to win awards but some of the members have won personal awards and more. In 2007 Denis Drennan won a Bank of Ireland National Leadership Award and also became Leinster Vice-President in 2007 which lasted till 2009.
Also last year’s chairperson Mary Brennan went on to win a Bank of Ireland National Leadership Award in 2010. Every year Kilkenny city hosts the Annual Black tie ball in February around Valentines Day which is now in its 41st year and is growing more and more popular each year and is always a
great night for everyone who attends. With each year come new challenges, the team to help drive the club forward is as follows: Chairperson: Mark Comerford; Secretary: Kilian Kane; Treasurer: Marie Therese Kennedy; PRO: Aoife Lanigan, so if you have any new ideas or activities contact any
one of these officers or attend a meeting to get your idea across you may just start something new. Monthly meetings are held in the Orchard Bar, New Orchard Road around 9.30pm. Weekly Activities include Indoor Soccer held every Monday night and Basketball or Badminton on Thursday night in
St. Canice’s Hall, Granges Road at 8pm. So if you are between the ages of 17 to 35 or know a person who you might think will enjoy a change to their social life and is living in Kilkenny contact Mick Wall to join today.

Know your Ag

On Friday the 30th of September the county round of Know your Ag was held in conjunction with south Tipperary in cloneen at the Anglim’s bar at 9pm. On the night there were 12 teams all hoping to represent there county at the national rally in cork at the end of October, six teams from Tipperary and six from Kilkenny, with the top team from each county getting to progress to that stage. On the night the six teams competing for the top prize from Kilkenny were as follows:
Kilkenny city, Callan, Suirside, two teams from Freshford and the young guns from Kilmanagh. While Fethard macra won the Tipperary spot via a tie-breaker round, Callan just barely topped Kilkenny city by winning by 4 points. Well done to both teams and best of luck for the rally.

Presidential visit
On Tuesday the 4th of October the monthly county executive meeting of Kilkenny macra was visited by Macra National president Alan Jagoe. On the night Alan was impressed by Kilkenny macra and commended Kilkenny for taking part in all areas of macra from competitions and to receiving awards. Well done to everyone and keep up the good work.

Beef and Sheep Stock Judging

Congratulations to Paddy Phlean and Podge Power on winning the senior beef and senior sheep stock judging respectively. We in Kilkenny county wish you both the best of luck for when go on to represent Kilkenny at the National Rally which is being held by Seandún Macra in cork from Friday the 28th till Sunday the 30th of October.

Take me out
Well done to William Holohan and Micheal Power for putting themselves out there and representing Kilkenny at Mountmellick macra’s take on the hit TV3 show take me out. A great night was had by all and if anyone would like to take part in other version of take me out there will be one held at the rally in cork at the end of October.

Club Officer Training
On Saturday the 24th of September many of the club officer’s from the macra clubs in Kilkenny attended training at Johnstown house in Enfield, county Meath right on the border with Kildare. The purpose of the training on the day was to help the new or existing club officer’s help drive the club forward in new ways into the future and to get to know many of the other clubs in neighbouring counties and forge last friendships. Well done to all for attending and a reminder for all those who were unable to attend or who may not be a club officer but would like to be that there will training taking place early next year.

Events

Leadership Awards
Five Macra members from Kilkenny County received Leadership Distinction Awards at a special awards ceremony which was held as part of the Bank of Ireland-sponsored County Officer Training in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny on the weekend of September 3rd and 4th. The winners on the night were as follows; from Kilkenny city macra two silver awards went to Deirdre Brennan and Aoife Lanigan and three awards went to Mullinavat macra with Bernie Woods and Emma Houghton both receiving bronze awards and William Holohan walking away with a gold award. Well done to the Kilkenny hurling on other successful year from all the members of Kilkenny county macra.

GAA
On Sunday the 12th of September the county final of both the men’s and women’s Gaa 7-a-side Gaelic football took place at st. Kieran’s collage in Kilkenny. On the night there was a showdown between the Callan and Kilkenny city men’s team which resulted in the Callan men winning on the night, and in a surprising turn of events we had four women’s teams all with a chance to get to represent Kilkenny County Macra at the national final. On the night we had two teams from Paulstown and one team each from Mullinavat and Callan but there can be only one winner and on the night Paulstown A that won. Both teams now get to go on and represent Kilkenny county macra on the 16th October, venue TBC.

Upcoming events
On Friday the 30th of September the county round of Know Your Ag will take place in Cloneen @ 9pm, venue TBC (ring Mick Wall for further details). This year’s county round will be held in conjunction with South Tipperary with the best team from each county going on the national finals which will be held on the friday night of the National Rally which is being held by Seandún Macra in cork from Friday the 28th till Sunday the 30th of October.

FBD Young Farmer of the Year
Well done to Michael Power on receiving his award as the Kilkenny FBD Young Farmer of the Year in the Seafield Hotel, Gorey on the 30th of August. Twenty five contestants from all over Ireland took part in the 13th FBD Young Farmer of the Year final. The competition, run by Macra in conjunction with the IFA, aims to recognise excellence in the agricultural industry and promote farming as a career with a bright future. Macra National President, Alan Jagoe, praised the enthusiasm of the farmers who had made it through to the national final, "Macra’s 'FBD Young Farmer of the Year Awards' promotes excellence among young, progressive farmers and recognises their commitment to both the agricultural industry and their local communities. Well done to Micheal from all of us in Kilkenny county Macra and also to his sister, Colette Power for nominating micheal to take part in this year’s competition for which she was entered in to a draw to win a weekend away and as luck would have it she won the weekend away.

Mr. Personality
This year’s Mr Personality Festival which was held back in April this year has raised funds for two local charities, a donation of €750 each has been presented to a representative to each of the following charities: Catriona Drennan for The Aishlinn Centre and Ann Boyle for The Carlow / Kilkenny Homecare Team. Both ladies thanked the Mr Personality Committee and Kilkenny Macra for their efforts and thanked them for the much need funds in the current economical climate.

UpComing Events
There will be a County Executive meeting held in the Springhill Court Hotel on the 8th of September 8.30pm, all are welcome to attend. To kick off the macra year there will be a bowling night held in K-bowl Mac Donagh Junction on the 9th of September from 8pm followed by a bite to eat in eddie rockets for anybody who wishes to attend.
